America, America

When Jesus had something important to say, He would often repeat the name of the person or people He was addressing. For example he said, "Martha, Martha" in Luke 10:41-42 when Martha was troubled about many things that were secondary in nature. In Luke 22:31-34 He said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you that he may sift you as wheat. . . ." Jesus called, "Saul, Saul," in Acts 9:4-6 on the Damascus Road and He wailed "Jerusalem, Jerusalem" in Luke 13:34-35 when He lamented over their unreceptive condition.

Today, I believe He is saying, "America, America," because He wants to get our attention and He has something very important to say to us in the "land of the free and home of the brave."

He would remind us in the words of the psalmist, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. . ." (Psalm 33:12a) and conversely cursed is the nation whose god is not the LORD.

First, we need to remember the glorious heritage of the United States of America.

In the words of the chorus of "America, the Beautiful," Katharine Lee Bates writes, "America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crowned thy good with brotherhood, From sea to shining sea." Historical revisionists are attempting to erase and replace our glorious and godly heritage with misinformation about our past. To learn the truth about America''s godly heritage consult the writings of David Barton of the WallBuilders ministry in Aledo, Texas, at http://www.wallbuilders.com/. In 1816, John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, wrote, "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers. It is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers."

Furthermore, we must recount the grievous heartbreak of our nation. To a large extent we are moving from days of glory to days of grief in "post-Christian" America. The glory is fading due to avarice (greed), alcohol (and drugs), abortion, adultery and the anti-Christian agenda of atheists and agnostics who absolutely believe that there are no moral absolutes. One of our former Presidents of the United States, John Adams, said is very well; "We have no government capable of dealing with an irreligious people." Dr. D. James Kennedy explains, "In other words, do away with religion and you do away with America. It is only through the religion of Christ that people can be free and good at the same time . . . " (Character & Destiny: A Nation In Search of Its Soul, pp. 140-141).

Finally, we may receive a gracious healing of our land. Lest we think that America has gone too far, we must remember that God sent a sweeping revival to the wicked godless Ninevites because they repented. Nothing less will do for America! "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Today, as in Jeremiah's day, the "Dr. Feelgoods" are telling us "Peace, peace!" When there is no peace" (Jeremiah 6:14b). In America we must remember how God dealt with the nation of Israel, His chosen people. Jeremiah 6:10-30 is applicable to America.

"Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide." Will you say with Joshua, "But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD" (Joshua 24:15b)
