Sit on the Lid and Laugh

What are we to do with the cares, hurts, and sorrows of our lives? Bertha Adams Backus had the following poem published in "Grit" on August 26, 1931. It is as fresh today as it was over 70 years ago and provides wise advice on how to handles the hurts we all must face in life.

"Build for yourself a strong box,
Fashion each part with care;
When it's strong as your hand can make it,
Put all your troubles there;
Hide there all thought of your failures,
And each bitter cup that you quaff;
Lock all your heartaches within it,
Then sit on the lid and laugh.

"Tell no one else of its contents,
Never its secrets share;
When you've dropped in your care and worry
Keep them forever there;
Hide them from sight so completely
That the world will never dream half;
Fasten the strong box securely
Then sit on the lid and laugh."

Philippians 4:8 reminds us to think only on the things that edify the soul and edify others. To think like the Word of God tells us, we will have put all the negative stuff in a strong box and sit on the lid and laugh!
