The Skeptics Prayer

As a pastor, you have led people in the “Sinners Prayer”, but have you ever led someone in the skeptic’s prayer? Christian author Donald Soper believes that doubt has replaced guilt as the number-one factor in the secular mindset. If this is true, lost people coming into our churches bring a resistant mindset toward the truths of God’s Word. Brought up in our pluralistic society with a postmodern definition of truth, secular people visiting our churches are in various stages of doubt. Can we help them? Only with a truth encounter!

Let me suggest that during your pastoral prayer or praying after you have read your preaching text, acknowledge the fact that so many people today are searching for rock solid answers to life’s problems and they have lots of questions and doubts.

You can say in your prayer, “If today you find yourself doubting God’s existence or His love and care for you, I encourage you to pray this prayer:

“Dear Jesus, I have so many questions, doubts, and even fears in my life today. I’m not even sure if you are real, but if you are, please show me today who you are. Would you make yourself and your truth known to me today and confirm it in my heart? Thank you for hearing my prayer.”

Pastor, many people are like the father of the demon-possessed boy that Jesus encountered. The boy’s father said, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief?” (Mark 9:24). Today so many people have daunting doubts that seek to overshadow the truth of God’s Word. Help them encounter the truth as never before.
